The NSS has written to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport expressing concern over her department’s award of £2.2m to Green Lane Masjid, a mosque with a well-documented history of antisemitism, homophobia and misogyny.
As part of the government’s Youth Investment Fund, the award was made earlier this month.
The grant partner of the government, Social Investment Business, provided the funds.
Now the government says Green Lane Masjid’s grant has been frozen and that an investigation by social investment firm is underway.
NSS Chief Executive Officer Stephen Evans said: “The awarding of public money to an organisation that espouses misogynistic, homophobic and antisemitic views and uses such divisive and derogatory language beggars belief.
“It is good that efforts are being made to enhance youth facilities and services in deprived areas of the country, but a grant given to such an organisation will certainly exacerbate division and intolerance.”
