Property owners who fail to comply with new energy regulations might face jail time

Ministers are considering giving themselves additional powers to create criminal offences and enhance penalties.

Property owners who fail to comply with new energy restrictions may risk jail time as the government pushes for net zero measures, according to a report.

Conservative MPs who oppose policies that penalise homeowners, landlords, and businesses have reacted angrily to the decision.

According to The Telegraph, property owners who do not follow laws to cut their energy consumption could face up to a year in prison and fines of up to £15,000.

Such provisions are incorporated in the Government’s Energy Bill.

When MPs return from recess on Tuesday, the Energy Bill will be debated for the first time in the House of Commons.

The Energy Bill will expand the authority granted by energy performance certificates.
